If you are an undocumented student and have a smart phone, check out this application, “DACA Scholars” (it’s free). This app was developed by Deyvid Morales, a DACA beneficiary himself. Through DACA Scholars, you can receive information about scholarship opportunities open to undocumented students, immigration news, and much more. Deyvid currently works for the Consulate of Mexico in Salt Lake City, and hopes to one day do diplomatic work and help as many people as he can along the way.
What do you want others to know about the “DACA scholars” application?
I would like everyone to know that higher education is not only possible but it’s necessary. And because of that I decided to build this platform for my community, it’s easy to use and very helpful for those who are seeking higher education but facing a tough time paying for it.
What motivated you to create this application?
I’m an undocumented immigrant. I’ve been through a deportation process myself, been through an immigration detention center and house arrest. All because I wanted to go to school. Once I won my case in court with the announcement of DACA in 2011, I was able to stay then I got a job at a local high school working with special education and something I would notice was the students who wouldn’t go to class and when I would ask them why they didn’t want to attend they would say “why graduate if we can’t afford college anyways” and even Latino parents I would ask would say, “No mijo, apenas podemos pagar la comida” and that made me a bit sad. So I created “DACA Scholars” this is actually my second immigration app. My first one was “Derechos Herencia” so I used the same platform to create this new app. DACA Scholars has a complete list of scholarships available to undocumented students living in the USA. The scholarships are divided by categories such as; academics, first generation, technology and much more, then it will give you a list of how much the scholarships are worth and after you make your selection it will show you a brief summary and the deadline, it will also have a link that will take you to the scholarship application. Not only are we providing the scholarships, but also tips on how to apply for them, news about immigration/DACA and much more! The app is 100% free and available for iPhones, Androids and Windows phone.
