Support undocumented youth this holiday season

With the holidays coming up, many of us are wondering what gifts to get for our loved ones. Here’s a list of items that would make great gifts and are a great way to support undocumented youth!

1) Books– Undocumented youth and allies have written several books on what it means to grow up undocumented, the effects of deportation, and much more. For example, Dreams Deported: Immigrant Youth and Families Resist Deportation features stories of deportation and of the courageous immigrant youth and families who have led national campaigns against deportations. The UCLA Labor Center has also published: Underground Undergrads: UCLA Undocumented Immigrant Students Speak Out, and Undocumented and Unafraid: Tam Tran, Cinthya Felix, and the Immigrant Youth Movement. Currently, the UCLA Labor Center is offering a $5 discount for purchase of this three-book series. For additional book ideas, check out these posts: “Reading recommendations”

2) Posters– Julio Salgado, an undocumented and queer activist, has used his art to inspire many of us and to express the realities faced by undocumented communities across the country. He graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in journalism and is highly involved in organizing. Make sure to check out his online store.

3) Shirts– You can also support undocumented youth-led efforts by purchasing an “Undocumented Unafraid Unapologetic” t-shirt. These shirts are from the New York State Leadership Council (NYSLC), which is the first undocumented youth-led organization in New York. They work to empower immigrant youth to drop the fear attached to our undocumented status and challenge the United States’ broken immigration system through leadership development, grassroots organizing, educational advancement, and self-expression. Their goal is to give undocumented youth the tools and space to organize and create change in our communities.

4) Bracelets– Angy Rivera is an undocumented student and organizer in New York. She has been selling bracelets to help pay for her college education. Here are the bracelet options:

$5 – Random Bracelet
$10 – 2 colors and thin width
$15 – 3 colors and medium width as well as hand written note
$20 – custom design and handwritten note
