College Spotlight: California State University, San Marcos

For today’s “College Spotlight”, I am happy to share with you all the work that educators, staff members, and students at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) are doing to support the undocumented community.

  1. Website: When I was an undergrad student at CSUSM, I had the opportunity to be a part of the Undocumented Student task force. One of our first responsibilities was to put together a webpage for undocumented students. The webpage includes information about applying to CSUSM as an undocumented student and resources for navigating college (e.g. applying for financial aid, finding support on campus).
  2. School personnel: There are several educators and staff members at CSUSM who are ready to support undocumented students. I had the privilege to connect with many of them when I was in college and definitely encourage folks to reach out to them for support and guidance.
  3. Undocumented youth-led organization:If you are an undocumented student or ally at CSUSM definitely get involved with Standing Together As oNe Dream (STAND)! I had an amazing time serving as President during my last year on campus. STAND seeks “to empower and inspire all immigrant youth to succeed in their academic career and use that platform to mobilize their respective communities. STAND enhances the educational experience of its members by offering such opportunities as: mentoring, scholarships, guest speakers, workshops, lecturers and other resources.  Our efforts on campus include working towards social justice and to raise awareness about the many challenges that immigrant youth and their families face.  We achieve this by actively participating in civic and political engagement.”
  4. Latin@ Center: Last, but not least, you will also want to connect with the Latin@ Center at CSUSM. They host a series of events aimed at supporting undocumented students (and first generation, low-income, Latin@ students more broadly). In addition to hosting events, the Latin@ Center also offers mentorship opportunities, internships, scholarships, and access to numerous books.

There are amazing folks at CSUSM who are working hard to make sure that there is a safe and supportive space for undocumented students to thrive in their educational pursuits. Check out all of the information and resources the campus has to offer and don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
