Following the inauguration of the current presidential administration, there have been numerous changes in U.S. immigration policy and enforcement practices quickly unfolding across the country. There have also been increasing rumors about sightings of immigration officers and potential raids. This has increased levels of fear, anxiety, and stress among undocumented students and their families. At My Undocumented Life, we are committed to providing up-to-date information and resources to undocumented students, their families, and allies (including educators, counselors, and administrators). This includes scholarship opportunities that are open to undocumented students, strategies for navigating the educational system while undocumented, information on how to apply for DACA, upcoming immigration-related events, news on immigration policies, and much more. More recently, we published a post that features resources related to immigrants’ rights, family emergency preparedness plans, and more. We also have a post that includes detailed recommendations for faculty and staff members to support undocumented & DACAmented students.
In light of the current political climate, it is all too important for students, educators, counselors, administrators, and community members to come together and learn more about the current state of immigration issues and what important steps can be taken.
Over the years, Carolina (Founder of My Undocumented Life) has presented and facilitated dozens of workshops, webinars, research presentations, conversations, and conferences on a variety of topics aimed at supporting undocumented students. This includes presentations about the following topics:
- Recent changes in U.S. immigration policy and enforcement at the federal, state, and local level that affect undocumented students and their families.
- How schools can identify and address the needs of undocumented students.
- The educational experiences of undocumented students (in K-12, college, or graduate school) and recommendations for school personnel on how to best support them.
- Resources available to undocumented students to pursue their higher education.
- Insights from research based on more than 300 in-depth interviews with undocumented students, their families, and the school personnel who work directly with them.
Carolina draws on more than two decades of personal, advocacy, professional, and research experience in this field.
