New Books on Immigration Out in 2024!

If you are looking for books to add to your reading list, check out this set of books on immigration that are coming out this year!

Living Together Across Borders: Communicative Care in Transnational Salvadoran Families by Lynnette Arnold

This book examines the lives of families living between parts of El Salvador and the United States. It is based on multi-sited ethnographic data collection and an in-depth analysis of families’ conversational practices, including moments of reminiscing and negotiating remittances. “Through cross-border conversations, families nurture intergenerational relations that sustain the family and convivencia (living-together) over the years despite ongoing separation.” More information from Oxford University Press can be found here.

Sin Padres, Ni Papeles: Unaccompanied Migrant Youth Coming of Age in the United States by Stephanie L. Canizales

This book centers on the experiences of youth who undertake unaccompanied and undocumented migrations across Central America and Mexico to the United States. “Sin Padres, Ni Papeles illuminates how unaccompanied teens who grow up as undocumented low-wage workers navigate unthinkable material and emotional hardship, find the agency and hope that is required to survive, and discover what it means to be successful during the transition to adulthood in the United States.” More information from the University of California Press can be found here.

Illegalized: Undocumented Youth Movements in the United States by Rafael A. Martinez

This book focuses on the experiences of undocumented youth organizers, including insight into the wide range of strategies activists have employed over the past two decades, as well as their efforts to contest forms of state control and violence. As an undocu-scholar, Rafael A. Martinez also incorporates his lived experience into the analysis. “Illegalized shows that undocumented youth and their activism represent a disruption to the social imaginary of the U.S. nation-state and its figurative and physical borders.” More information from the University of Arizona Press can be found here.

Learning to Lead: Undocumented Students Mobilizing Education by Jennifer Nájera

This book centers on the experiences of undocumented college students at the University of California, Riverside, to highlight how students’ experiences in college influences their activism. “As students create community with each other, they come to understand that their individual experiences of illegality are part of a larger structure of legal violence.” More information from Duke University Press can be found here.

Amplifying Black Undocumented Student Voices in Higher Education by Felecia S. Russell

This book features the experiences of college students who identify as Black and undocumented. It is based on interviews with 15 students, as well as the author’s personal experiences growing up as a Black DACA recipient. “The stories told here examine the intersection of race and identity in determining positioning within society, with the goal of contributing awareness and promoting more inclusive practices among higher education communities.” More information from Routledge can be found here.
