Covid19 State Financial Assistance for Undocumented & Mixed-Status Families in California

On April 15, 2020, the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom announced a $125M fund to provide direct financial support to undocumented immigrants and their loved ones who were excluded from the federal government assistance through the CARES Act.

The CA Department of Social Services (CDSS) which is overseeing this fund has now released additional information and resources for members of undocumented and mixed-status families who may be eligible for up to $1,000 in assistance. Please note that through this fund, “an undocumented adult who qualifies can receive $500 in direct assistance, with a maximum of $1,000 in assistance per household.”

The CDSS has identified twelve immigrant-serving organizations throughout the state of California who will be responsible for distributing these funds. Note: According to the CDSS, “Nonprofit organizations will not be assisting individuals prior to May 18. Individuals should not contact them ahead of time regarding disaster relief assistance. Application assistance will not be provided in person.”

Between now and May 18th, families can begin to familiarize themselves with the fund, organizations in their area that have been identified by the CDSS, and browse through the Frequently Asked Questions on the CDSS official website for more information. As the CDSS states, “Applicants will be considered on a first come, first served basis. The $75 million in direct assistance will be distributed to individuals with approved applications beginning on May 18, 2020, until the funding is spent or until June 30, 2020, at the latest. Given the economic hardship undocumented adults are experiencing due to COVID-19, this disaster relief assistance may run out within a very short period of time.”

IMPORTANT: This resource was first posted by CDSS official website. The link to the fund may not work after the deadline has passed.
